Sometimes it’s the things in life we lack that make us the most thankful. Bryan and Leslie Shoffner, like most North Carolina parents, thankfully don’t have a child facing a life-threatening illness. And for that, these proud parents of four know how fortunate they truly are.
A few years ago, however, a one-time encounter with North Carolina Children's Hospital would leave a permanent imprint on the family. The Shoffners' daughter developed a rising fever of 103 degrees and became listless and unresponsive. A terror-stricken Bryan drove her to the Children’s Hospital in Chapel Hill, where expert clinicians soon made her well. Learning that his daughter was only one of more than 60,000 children treated at the Hospital each year, Bryan vowed that one day he would find a way to contribute.
That day has come.
In late 2007, Bryan Shoffner, president of Shoffner Construction, decided to build homes within The Hamptons, an upscale Chatham County community. He soon realized that the community presented the perfect opportunity: he would create a dream home with all proceeds benefiting N.C. Children’s Hospital.
Knowing that every dollar saved on construction would impact children and families in need, Bryan began securing discounted and donated building materials with the help of the community’s developer, Rex Vick, Jr., CEO of Windjam Development. The pair also convinced many of their subcontractors to donate time to the construction of the home, appropriately named “Tomorrow’s Hope.”
Tomorrow’s Hope is the first luxury estate home being crafted to benefit N.C. Children’s Hospital, through which Shoffner Construction and Windjam Development hope to raise in excess of six figures for the Hospital.
In early February 2008, Shoffner Construction and Windjam Development joined with local representatives and dignitaries at The Hamptons to celebrate the groundbreaking of this historic project and kickoff a year-long fundraising campaign for the Children’s Hospital. Dozens looked on as the ribbon was symbolically cut, ushering the start of this great undertaking. Guests of honor included Dr. Dan von Allmen, Surgeon-in-Chief of the Children's Hospital, as well as Mark and Leslie Nelson with their son, Carter, who was formerly a patient in the Hospital's Newborn Critical Care Center.
"I am inspired by all the folks who have stepped forward to assist us in this cause," said Shoffner. "It is a testament to what the Children's Hospital symbolizes—not just in this area but throughout the state."
Rex Vick, Jr. is equally excited. “All the planning is starting to pay off,” said Vick. “We’re confident that we can reach our fundraising goal and raise awareness for this remarkable institution.”
